With barely eight day left for the commencement of the 2010 grand finale of the Sprite Ball Championship, we explore the chances of the over thirty schools billed to make the event a memorable one and the first on our bill today is Sekondi-Takoradi based St John.
The Saint are making their debut appearance in the National event after they failed to make the grades in 2009 and they’re certainly primed for a time of their lives as they battle the best from the other seven regions who’re all keen to stake a claim for the title.
The school played bridesmaid to their perennial rivals Ghana Secondary and Technical School (G.S.T.S) following a streak of buster performance at the venue of their bitter rivals. They may have lost the final in a nail-biting fashion but they displayed amazing bravado and team spirit-which was extremely missing during last year’s edition of the competition in the now oil-rich region.
Maxwell Amos, Kelvin Tagoe, Gideon and Anoud Aboud N’dri raised the bar in the 2010 edition of the competition and their presence will be key for their school as attempt to create history by winning on their first appearance.
A close shave victory over Ahantaman in their opening fixture underlined their quest to kill off their blues of 2009. Small forward Nana Yaw Ebu was the chief catalyst for the side as they hammered unfancied St Mary’s 16-4 in their second game before producing another riveting display to beat Takoradi Technical Institute 11-2 to set up a final date with the giant.
Their final game which ended 10-9 in favour of their host was one of the biggest and end to end action witnessed in the regional qualifiers since the inception of the competition five years ago.
They know they stake will be very high at the grand finale where the crème de la crème will gather at the El-Wak stadium o December 22-23rd, 2010.
