Dumfeh rues lost chance at 2010 grand finale of Sprite Ball Championship

The grand finale of the 2010 edition of the Sprite Ball Championship may be over but captain of Aggrey Memorial Zion Senior High School, Dyllis Achiaa Dumfeh, is still ruing the lost opportunity after her side lost the trophy for the second time in a row.

The Cape-Coast based side well cruising for their first title at the National event until a late individual brilliance from Sacred Heart’s Ruby denied them the chance to ink the title.

It was a nerve-racking performance from the young charges who were determined to avenge last year’s defeat to the same side at the same venue.

Youngsters Barabara, Kissiwaa Sosu and Ajata Iddrisu alongside their ‘ill-capitano’ produced and eye-catching display at the 5th edition of the championship that drew thousands of crazy basketball fans to the venue during the two-day competition.

The defending champions showed team spirit and character and even when they were down during the first half and things looked like working well for their opponent, they kept their confidence up to produced one of the biggest comebacks in recent memory to knick a painful 15-12 success and sweep victory right under their feet.

It was a total disappointment as players were seen crying on the court like ‘babies’ – a clear indication of how close they came in winning the title for the first time.

They now have to wait for another year to take a shot at the title and captain Dumfeh can’t hide her frustration.

‘We’re very sad because we came so close this year to winning the title and if you look at the fact we played better than our opponent and the fact that despite the performance we couldn’t land our hands on the title, saddens my heart and the entire team’. ‘This year we were very determined to halt the dominance of Sacred Heart. And that accounted for that spirited performance from the girls. But after starting the game so we well, I don’t know what hit the team as momentarily lost of concentration made us pay in the dying minute of the game’.

‘They’ve beaten us twice at the National event but we hope it won’t be for the third time. We’ll surely live to fight another day. We at Aggrey never give up so easily. We have the fighting spirit and we will surge on in 2011’. She added
