Chief Executive Officer of Rite Multimedia, Yaw Sakyi Afari, has tabled a proposal for football giants’ in the country’s league to establish basketball teams as a mark of helping to broaden the scope of the game in the West African Country.
The establishments of top notch basketball teams by Premier Football Clubs are common practices in Europe, South and Latin America and some countries in Africa.
The move according to the affable entrepreneur will contribute significantly to the idea of using the game as a career avenue for players in the country.
Spanish football giants Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Valladolid and Zaragoza have basketball teams that compete in the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (Liga-ACB) on weekly basis. Madrid and Barcelona have in between them 25 league titles since the competition begun in 1983 with Madrid clinching the highest number of titles with 22 while Barcelona can boast of only three.
Five-time European football champions Liverpool, powerhouse Manchester United, Everton, Birmingham, Newcastle United and Sunderland among others that have teams that are playing in the United Kingdom basketball league which also include Scottish giant Rangers basketball team.
South America greats Flamengo and Boca Juniors also have teams that play in the Brazilian and Argentine basketball league respectively.
Indeed top flight football clubs in Nigeria like Heartland FC, Delta Force and Kanu Pillars are involved in the basketball league of Africa’s most populous nation while football teams in Libya, Cote D’voire and Libya amongst others have crafted in basketball teams.
The idea has received massive endorsement by major stakeholders in the West African country. It has dominated the sporting headlines on local radio stations and comments on social networking website Facebook has been out of this world.
Afari told Kumasi based Angel FM: ‘We believe this idea is brilliant since it will help to catapult the dream of making the game a career avenue for these players. Having staged competitions for almost all sectors of the education in Ghana, the move to go a step further by having these football teams establishing their own basketball teams will be awesome’.
‘Most of these top European teams that people follow in Ghana love the game and that’s why the likes of Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Sunderland CS Bologna and others have built a strong team that are playing in the country’s big leagues’. We think if we put our heads together and come up such a system it will go a long way to help promote the game and build capacity’.’ he concluded.
Ghana basketball has seen some ground breaking revolution for the past five years and the dream to see these top Ghanaian football giant establish their own basketball teams and participate in a league on weekly basis will be the catalyst these players need to realize their dreams.
