The revolution of Sprite ball invasion started in 2007 with a view to give the game a new image and flicker. It was to offer the platform to young and talented players who have not had the opportunity to exhibit it to the world. It begun as an Accra-based competition involving selected senior high schools.
The first edition of the now popular competition started in January 2007 but today the competition has grown from strength to strength with an estimated fan base of over 5 thousand people that attended the 2011 finals at the El-Wak stadium while huge numbers attended the regional qualifiers.
It will be exactly five years in January 2012 since the competition begun and as part of plans to celebrate the event in a mega fashion, the organizers will put together a big pre-bash celebration at the Aviation Social Centre on December 23, 2011 dubbed ‘5th anniversary celebration party”.
Activities lined up include 1 on 1, 3 on 3, Slam Dunk, Freestyle, rap, music and dance competitions amongst other mouth-watering activities that have been lined up to celebrate an incredible five years of staging the biggest basketball event for high schools in the history of the game in the West African country.
It will be an occasion to socialize and reminisce old times and make new friends ahead of the 5th edition of the competition on January 5-6, 2012 at the El-Wak stadium and Aviation Social Centre respectively.
The pre-bash jam will also see some of the country’s renowned artistes in attendance as they will dish out some great tunes for followers of the game. It will be a family affair as thousands of people are expected to attend and be part of the history making process.
Students from over 200 schools that have participated in the competition in the past from the eight regions of Ghana will also get a unique opportunity of meeting some of their movie stars some of whom will grace the occasion.
Students from Accra Academy, Mfantsipim, Adisadel College, Wesley Girls, Pope Johns, St Peters, St Roses, Accra Girls, Presec, Legon, Presec, Osu, Prempeh College, Opoku Ware, Yaa Asantewaa, Aggrey Memorial, Ghana National College, Sunyani, Techiman, Damongo, Ghanasco, Tamale, Akosombo International and Labone Senior High amongst others will all be present on December 23.
Other schools including St Mary’s, Fijai, Archbishop Porter Girls, Keta, Ketabusco, Awudome, Ghana Secondary and Technical (G.S.T.S), Serwaa Nyarko, Toase, Kumasi Anglican, Kumasi High, St Louis, Koforidua Secondary Technical School (K.S.T.S), Kumasi Wesley Girls, Sacred Heart, Armed Forces, Oda, Okuapeman, Mawuli, Nkwanta, Aburi Girls, Abuakwa State College, Temasco, Nkwawkaw Senior High and a tall list of other great schools in the country will make Aviation come alive.
All roads will lead to the Aviation Centre for the first ever Sprite Ball Jam as a prelude celebration to the 5th anniversary of the prestigious high school competition.
