BASKETBALLghana.com editor Patrick Akoto takes a look at the few shocking qualifiers and a handful of appetite-whetting games in the Ashanti Region and predicts the candidates from the Garden City could spring a surprise in the grand finale.
With barely three days left for the big finals of the 2012 Indomie Community Dunks, there are four qualifying teams from the Ashanti and Central Regions who are hungry with plenty of talent looking to achieve gold medal glory.
For the next 72 hours, basketball will be firmly in the spotlight, so let’s take a look at who will be competing for ultimate bragging rights, what to expect from each bracket and who will leave the El-Wak stadium clad in some shiny silverware.
Besides major powers like Burma Camp, Dansoman and Cantonments, Kwadaso have a number of quality players that are looking to do some changes in their bracket and make their way into the elimination rounds.
Kwadaso faced colossal teams from the Ashanti region and stoked the embers to win the competition in style by beating rivals Asokwa Lakers in an epic final.
While this was fantastic, though expected, the accomplishment chalked clearly indicated they won’t be pushovers in Accra.
Their big star Kyei Baffour is up and running and will be one of the exciting forces to look forward to after tearing opponents with ease.
The talents level across the pond is on a steep increase and will be the downright heavy favourites to win top honours.
Of course the expectations are still the same, but there is no denying that the competition isn’t a simple walk in the park.
While Emmanuel Mensah’s inconsistency issues don’t make him a prime candidate to take over starting duties for Kwadaso, his energy and athleticism perfectly suits a heavy bench role.
Not only is he a dominant defender when he puts his mind to it, but there are few players in the game who can stay in front of a penetrating defensive networks of the likes of Burma Camp and Dansoman.
Surely the debutants will be a difficult nut to crack and should not be underrated at any cost.
Just in case you were not aware team Asokwa has a team that is jam-packed with big name players and make fans sit on tenterhooks for many minutes.
They are an awesome side with an incredible team spirit and character to succeed. Despite making their first appearance in the community basketball competition, the Asokwa lads put up a brave fight in the Ashanti regional qualifiers.
The stakes are high going into the finals and they will be one of the sides to watch with and eagle eye.
Definitely their coach has an arduous responsibility of working on some few weaknesses of the team.
