EASTERN REGION BRACES ITSELF FOR THE FIRST REGIONAL COMPETITION OF SPRITE BALL, 2009.
The first train of the 2009 edition of the Sprite Ball Championships will hit the Eastern Region on the 17th of October, 2009.
Over twenty schools drawn from the various zones in the region will compete but only six (three boys and three girls teams) will have the opportunity to play in the grand finale slated for Accra on the 19th and 20th December, 2009.
Suhum Secondary Technical School (Sutesco), the defending champion from the male category is expected to face stiff competition from schools like Pope John’s Senior High, St Peters, Akosombo International School (AIS) and Oda Senior High amongst others.
The various schools have commenced vigorous training sessions ahead of an exciting and competitive campaign. This year’s event comes off at the Koforidua Senior High and Technical School (KSTS) basketball court.
Fans are expected to be held spell-bound during the day’s competition and the various coaches are in buoyant mood ahead of the October 17 deadline.
The Sprite Ball Championship in the Eastern Coast of the country has over the past three years produced fireworks with massive bolt from the blue performances from the various schools coupled with shocks and enthusiasm.

Sprite Ball Championship (SBC) begins in October
The fourth edition of the annual inter-high schools basketball competition dubbed ”Sprite Ball Championship” (SBC) comes off from October to December this year. The event which is expected to attract over 100 senior high schools in Ghana promises to be intriguing, spirited and enthralling.
In fulfillments of Rite Multimedia’s promise to extend the competition to other parts of the country, Ashanti and Western regions have been included to the existing four (4) hence playing the competition in six regions: Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern, Ashanti, Western and Central regions.
The 2009 competition begins from the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua on the 17th October,2009.The first stop Koforidua Secondary Technical will be the safe haven for the gathering and selection of the six schools to represent the Region in the grand finale. It is worthy to note that the first three Boys and Girls schools from each region will participate in the grand finale slated for saturday 19th and Sunday 20th December 2009 at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
Defending champions Achimota senior high (boys) and Wesley Girls senior high (girls) have underlined their hopes of appearing in the final and for the first time become the schools to make history by successfully defending the title.

POPS MENSAH INSPIRES ME- AWUAH
Shooting guard for Dansoman, Paa Kwesi Awuah, says Ghanaian- British born player Pops Mensah Bonsu is his motivation to play the game to the highest level.
The young prodigy was also another star at the recently concluded U-18 basketball competition at the El-Wak Stadium on September 4.
He guided Dansoman to place third in the tournament after they were shocked at the semi-final stage by Ridge.
He now says he wants to emulate the achievement of the Ghanaian basketball icon who currently plays for Houston Rocket.
‘Pops is a great basketball player and the fact that he is a Ghanaian and playing at that level motivates me and tells me I can also do it.’ Awuah told basketballghana
‘I have heard so much about him and his prospects with several teams abroad. I know I can follow in his footsteps if I stay focus’
Pops started out as a junior at the English Basketball League club Hackney White Heat, before he moved to the USA. He spent his sophomore year of high school playing at the Hun School of Princeton in Princeton, New Jersey, then transfered to St. Augustines College Preparatory School in Richland, New Jersey.
Pops has had stints with Spanish ACB team DKV Joventut, Austin Toros and Toronto Raptors.

MAHAMA SET NBA TARGET
Small Forward for Cantonments, Raymond Mahama, is convinced the lessons he acquired during Community Dunks will make him a better player in the future.
The 17-year-old was arguably the tournament’s best player after he exhibited some amazing sublime piece of skills and dexterity during the 13-week period of community dunks at the El- Wak Stadium.
Mahama the small forward of the Cantonment team distinguished himself during the three months epoch of exciting and gruelling matches in the U-18 basketball competition among ten communities in the Greater Accra Region.
He was instrumental in helping his side win the maiden edition of Community Dunks 2009 and held fans spell –bound during the duration of the tournament as a results of his dazzling performances.
On offense, Mahama is known for using his strength and quickness to get past defenders, and for absorbing contact while finishing at the basket.
The former student of Tamale Senior High School is a solid rebounder who could regularly be ranked among the best in rebounds for the small forward position at the recently concluded community dunks.
His potential has led to many comparisons to NBA legends Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Micahel Jordan and LeBron James among others.
The young prospect told basketballghana ‘I think I played well during community dunks and am positive that with time and hard work I will be able to reach my long term dream of playing at the NBA.’
‘ It is not going to be easy at all but nothing I believe is impossible and so we just have to wait and see what happens in the next few years.’

DANSOMAN WAS OUR GREATEST FEAR – CANTONMENTS.
Champions of Community Dunks, Cantonments, have admitted their fiercest rivals Dansoman were their biggest threat at the recently concluded maiden U-18 basketball competition.
Dansoman beat Cantonments at the second classification but lost grounds in the semi-final stage against Ridge.
Speaking in an interview with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah on Atlantis Radio, Small Forward for Cantonments Raymond Maha admitted they were lucky to have won the competition.
‘We thought Dansoman were going to win the competition because of their performance and the fact that we lost against them in the second classification.’
‘They were tough and indeed showed us great stuff but our coach told us to believe in ourselves and so we did and eventually won the tournament against Ridge.
‘We are still training for future tournaments and so we are still in camp.’
‘For now I am concentrating on playing basketball and hopefully Community Dunks will take us to the top in the near future.’

NSC Boss Praises Community Dunks.
The C.E.O of the National Sports Council Worlanyo Agrah, has assured Rite Multimedia of his outfit’s support for the continuous promotion of basketball at the grass root level in the country.
Agrah made these revelations when he attended the closing ceremony of the maiden U-18 Basketball tournament at the El-Wak Stadium on Friday September 4.
Rite Multimedia, a leader in basketball development in Ghana put together an exciting 13-week of basketball tournament among 10 communities in the Greater Accra region.
The easy-going National Sports Council chief who attended both the opening and closing ceremony admits more needs to be done to projecting the image of the game to the highest level in the country.
”Rite Multimedia has been amazing and I will like to say here today that they will receive all the support from the Sports Council as they continue their quest to push the game forward in Ghana’’.
He added that he is amazed at the number of fans who thronged the stadium. ”It will interest you to know that some premier league football clubs in Ghana do not even attract such a crowd”. Agrah told basketballghana.
According to Mr Agrah he believes that the combine effort from the National Sports Council, sponsors and stakeholders will build a stronger National team capable of competing at the international stage.

GBBA President Unveils His Passion For Community Dunks.
The President of the Ghana Basketball Association, David Addo-Ashong, has praised the level of play and competition at the recently concluded maiden U-18 Basketball competition at the El – Wak Stadium.
Ashong says he was impressed with the high level of competition among the ten communities over the 13-week period.
He also indicated the association’s keenness in supporting Rite Multimedia to continue with their push to promote the game nationwide.
The tournament which spanned over a period of three months attracted the crème de la crème of Ghana Sports and thousands of fans to the El-Wak stadium every Friday.
The country’s basketball supremo told basketballghana’ what I have seen here over the past weeks is pure talents and genuine desire of this young players to get to the top.’

Thousands Go Gay At Community Dunks.
Thousands of fans who thronged the El-Wak Stadium for the maiden U-18 basketball tournament for the past 13-weeks have expressed satisfaction with the level of organisation and play.
The El-Wak stadium was a scene of excitements, euphoria and tension every Friday and the fans can’t wait to for the next edition of Community dunks.
The competition came to end on Friday after three months of gruelling and lip-smacking round of matches in the prestigious competition for ten communities.
Dansoman placated their suffering fans after by snatching a late win to take the bronze medal.
Champions Cantonments and Ridge on the other hand lit up an enthralling final game at the El-Wak Stadium on Friday September 4.
The organisers of the tournament, Rite Multimedia has promised another unparalleled competition next year as fans begin to count the tension and apprehension that gripped them during the entire 13-weeks of competition.

CANTONMENTS HAIL SOWAH.
Coach Daniel Sowah has earned a hero’s status in his vicinity after guiding Cantonments’ to clinch the maiden U-18 basketball competition at the El-Wak Stadium on Friday September 4.
The tough-talking coach has etched his name in the country’s basketball folklore by becoming the first coach to lift the famous and prestigious community dunks trophy.
Cantonments beat Ridge 52-44 to clinch the ultimate diadem in a game which was played before a massive crowd at the El –wak stadium.
Sowah is now hailed in his neighbourhood and ushered with lots of praise and commendations.
The coach says he has been overwhelmed with the kind of reception he has received since he won the community dunks trophy on September 4.
‘It is so amazing the kind of response I have gotten in my area ever since we won the title.’ Sowah told basketballghana.
‘It is refreshing and wonderful and the feeling is good and I think I feel appreciated very much by our own people.
‘They were with us from the beginning supporting is all the way and now we have repaid them for their unflinching support.
‘We have made history and I guess community dunks cannot be mentioned without the name of Sowah and Cantonments.
‘I kept on telling you I was taken the cup away and surely I have delivered on my promise.’
