Former Opoku Ware star Edem Dompeh has vowed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology will end the dominance of Accra Polytechnic ahead of the 2015 UPAC Basketball Championship.
However, KNUST must first negotiate their Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regional zone qualifiers before they can start dreaming.
The Kumasi giants will slug it out against rivals Kumasi Polytechnic, Sunyanyi Polytechnic and Christian Service University College for the single slot available.
Coach Regan Sarpong hopes to count on the experience of his players to deliver the sucker punch in the Garden City before setting their eyes on the ultimate title.
KNUST, the current silver medalist in the GUSA Championship can boast of an array of stars including Kwame Adjei Akrasi and Emmanuel Ekow Amoako as well as Dompeh himself.
The trio will form the backbone of the team ahead of their involvement this year and Dompeh has set an audacious target of end the supremacy of defending champions Accra Polytechnic.
“We know the teams will be strong but of course almost all teams have their eyes on Accra Poly,” he said
“You can’t fault anybody for that because they are the most fearsome side in the competition.
“They have virtually won everything and when you’re coming up against such teams, you need to work extra hard.
“They will be tough but they can be broken down. They can’t win forever. Someone has to step up and stop them and I believe KNUST can do that.
He added: We delivered an improved game during the 2014 GUSA games in Cape Coast and hopes to build on that.
“We may not have won the title, but we showed our class and pedigree. This is a bigger tournament with all tertiary blocks involved and so I believe we shall step up our plate this time around.”
Accra Polytechnic are the most successful team at the tertiary level in recent years and boast of the best army of stars in the country.
Reigning Ghanaian MVP Baniba Dodzie, Daniel Nii Aryee, Romeo, Nicholas Amuzu and others are all in the reckoning to return to the court this year as it promises to be fireworks.
