A lot was said about Emmanuel Mudiay’s potential before and after last month’s NBA draft, and the Congolese made sure to show that he is a valuable asset for the Denver Nuggets during the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League camp last week.
In fact, Mudiay responded to any doubters with solid performances, helping the Nuggets collect a 3-2 record.
The 19-year-old point, who skipped a college basketball career to play professionally in China in 2014-15, came up with a few eye-catching moves in Vegas, averaging 12 points, 5.8 assist and 3.5 rebounds in five games, and was named in the All-NBA Summer League 2015 Second Team.
The Nuggets seem to have high expectations for the Kinshasa native, especially after trading point-guard Ty Lawson to Houston.
Lawson, who had been the starting point guard for the last four-plus seasons, led the Nuggets in scoring with 15.2 points in 2014-15.
Mudiay, an athletic point guard who is often compared to Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, was selected seventh overall by Denver, and is expected to add not only his athleticism, but also scoring.
In Vegas Mudiay made a number of impressive passes and showed good command of the offensive end.
The 6-foot-5 guard headlined the Samsung All-NBA Summer League Second Team along with Larry Drew II (New Orleans), Dwight Powell (Dallas), Noah Vonleh (Portland) and Alan Williams (Houston).
Meanwhile, second-year small forward Kyle Anderson of the San Antonio Spurs who played in just 33 games as a rookie, was named Most Valuable Player of the Samsung NBA Summer League 2015.
And Spurs new recruit Jonathan Simmons was named Championship Game MVP, helping San Antonio beat the Phoenix Suns 93–90 on Monday to claim the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League title.
