Marshalls University College is on course to hand full time scholarships to stand out talents in Ghana to ensure individuals excel in both education and basketball.
The Accra-based institution started the scholarship scheme following a solid showing in last year’s Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship. Currently, the school offers half-scholarships and has 17 player-students on the books for this year and next year.
According to head coach James Okine, the scheme is a great initiative by authorities which can only get better and “make it easy for the guys to get education”.
“The program is really going well, we started preparing ourselves by giving half scholarships to young guys to help them become better and responsible men in the future. That is something we need in our country to promote basketball” he said.
He continued, “What you can get from basketball is life and life is education so basketball and education, that’s what we are promoting at Marshalls”.
“This scholarship has really impacted our team because we have some great guys from different areas that are participating right now and we believe with this decision that we have taken is going to bring success to us.”
Lovelace Boakye Yiadom a beneficiary, lauded the scheme for its’ immense benefits. Lovelace was recruited from Chiefs Basketball Academy in Kumasi and is now an integral member of the team.
The 2016 UPAC Baketball Championship will run from February 27 to April 16 have 28 tertiary institutions from eight regions compete.
