The 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship begins today at the University of Ghana Center Court at 11:00 GMT. The third edition of the Championship is headlined by world best-selling deodorant Rexona.

The competition will feature 28 tertiary institutions from 8 regions in Ghana and tips off with a contest between Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Ho Polytechnic. Ghana Technology University College (Accra) takes on last minute entrants Pentecost University College in the next game of the opening round of Zone A.

The competition was rocked by controversy following “original” Zone A host, University of Professional Studies (UPSA’s) decision to withdraw because it got stripped of hosting rights. The institutions basketball court was deemed unfit to host the games due to its’ bad state.

The group winner of seven groups qualifies automatically for the quarter final with the best second placed team among Zones A, F and G qualifying to join the other teams to complete the quarter final list for the championship.

GIMPA is highly tipped to qualify out of the group. Accra Polytechnic is a two time champion and the defending champion heading into the championship.
