Ahead of Allen Iverson’s induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, former Philadelphia Center Dikembe Mutombo has congratulated his former teammate and gone on to say Iverson is one of the best basketball players to ever play the game.
The 2015 Hall of Fame inductee who also played for Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks during his 18 year stay in the NBA, made the statement in an exclusive interview with Basketballghana.com during his short stint in Ghana.
“I congratulate him (Iverson) for making it to the basketball hall of fame but the reason you deserve that Allen is because you are one of the best…basketball players to ever play this game. There are not many short guys that will come to the court on your size that can perform like you do. I applaud you and I am happy to call you a friend and I am happy to call you a brother” he said.
The 2016 event will have stalwarts Shaquille O’Neal , former Houston Rockets big man Yao Ming and Sheryl Swoopes inducted on Saturday, September 10 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The 7 foot 2 Mutombo paired with Iverson in 2001 to a magical run to the NBA Finals before losing to Los Angeles Lakers led by O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. Iverson, who stands at 6 feet, was the number one pick in the 1996 NBA Draft and played the major part of his 14 year NBA career for Philadelphia Sixers.
