Trio make early impression in ongoing Women’s AfroBasket

Heavyweights Angola, Nigeria and Senegal have made it to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Women’s African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) taking place in Bamako, Mali.

All three teams have made it past the group stage on the back of three straight wins in as many matches with Senegal and Nigeria dictating play in Group B while Angola occupies the top spot in Group A.

Defending champions Senegal got its title defense off to a big winning start as the West African side recorded a 105-39 win over fellow West African nation Guinea in the opening game.

The side also accounted for Mozambique courtesy a 76-67 win while Nigeria beat Democratic Republic of Congo 84-47 and 80-69 win over Mozambique.

In Group A, continental powerhouse Angola has maximum points from three games played with Mali and Ivory Coast following closely. Both teams have won two games in three matches.

Tunisia and Central African Republic occupy bottom spots in the group and DRC and Guinea are the worst performing sides in Group B.

No games will be played today as the tournament witnesses an off day before games resume on Tuesday August 22; the competition ends on August 27.
