Galaxy wins Tudu Derby as CYO top Reformers

CYO (yellow) won its sixth game of the season over Reformers.

Galaxy (blue) clinched the win over brothers Spartans.

CYO is playing again and back to winning in the Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division II following a spell out of action.

The side beat Junior Reformers 66-54 in the opening game tonight at the Lebanon House Court in Tudu before two home sides squared off in the final game of the round.

Spartans and Galaxy faced off in the All -Tudu matchup which the latter won 45-41 in a close that had the game’s lead change many times.

Losing to Galaxy and CYO respectively, represents a second straight loss this week for Spartans and Junior Reformers in the campaign.

CYO held a 61-38 lead heading to the final quarter. Reformers Ollenu scored a layup after gathering a long pass to get matters underway in the fourth quarter. CYO Guard Francis Ayitey then split the opposing team’s defense to score and extend his team’s lead to 66-47 with 4:08 remaining.

Reformers then went on an eight point run to reduce deficit to 54-66 with Ollenu and Mawusi Kalla scoring from free throw line. However, CYO got enough production from the likes of Akakpo Nicholas and Prince Owusu to clinch the win.

After going scoreless for over five minutes, Spartans Rafiq Brimah scored his team’s first point in the first quarter to trail 2-6 finally falling 3-10 to Galaxy in a quarter characterized by turnovers and poor execution from both teams.

Spartans opened the second quarter with a flurry of buckets as the team showcased great ball movement to find Abibu Aminu and who scored a three point shot and finished off an assist from Raymond Affram.

The run got Spartans a 15-14 lead after but Galaxy retook the lead after Anthony Adade assisted Sulleyman Wahab’s finish. Spartans Sefa Sakyi tied the score at 18 with 1:25 remaining and the situation remained same at half time with the score tied at 21.

Like the second quarter, Spartans got off to an impressive start with Benjamin Twum hitting from deep to give team a 25-21 lead early in third quarter. However, Galaxy Guard Adade got his side back in the lead by finishing off free throws to hold a 34-29 lead.

Sakyi and Abibu combined effectively to get Spartans back in the lead again but Galaxy’s Jamil Tahim and Stephen Bossman provided points for Galaxy to clinch the derby win.
