Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) record winners Angola, have appointed Will Voight as the National Male Basketball Coach.
The former Nigeria Head Coach replaces Manuel Silva who was at the helm during Angola’s poor run at the last AfroBasket held in Tunisia and Senegal.
Voight steps into the top position with a lot of expectations after leading Nigeria to its only continental title in 2015.
Angola lost to surprise package Morocco at the last edition of the Championship at the quarter final stage to miss out on another title.
With an aging team, Voight has plans to rebuild the team:
“This country has a rich basketball tradition and our goal is to develop the next generation…The rebuild has to happen, and we hope to win with the younger players” he said in an interview with FIBA.com
The first challenge for the new head will be guiding Angola through qualifiers for the next FIBA World Cup in 2019 to be held in China.
Angola is in Group C with Morocco, Egypt and Democratic Republic of Congo. Qualifiers take place from November 24-26.
