Biyombo to play for DR Congo in World Cup qualifiers

After months of speculation, Bismarck Biyombo has been given the all clear to play for Democratic Republic of Congo in the latest round of qualifiers for the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

Biyombo has expressed his desire to play for Congo in past years but due to issues bothering on insurance coverage with the NBA prevented him from playing in national team colors.

That has been resolved and the Orlando Magic Center will lead Congo through the crucial stage which takes place in Egypt from June 29-July 1.

“Like many people, I too have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Last year, I came to play, but eventually it became impossible to do it. Now, I am almost ready. I love my country, and it is an honor to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo” he said to FIBA.com

His presence is badly needed on a Congolese team that ranks bottom of Group C with zero wins in three games trailing Egypt, Angola and Morocco in what has been described as the “Group of Death”.

Biyombo recently completed his second season with Magic.
