Former winners of Africa’s elite basketball club competition-Africa Basketball League (AfroLeague) Al Ahly and Primeiro do Agosto have qualified from the group stage in this year’s edition.

The pair secured the top two spots in Group C to advance to the Elite 8; the two teams are the first to do so with games in the three remaining groups yet to be played.

The competition’s most successful team Agosto from Angola topped Group C after winning all three games in the mini tournament which run from February 8-10 in Cairo, Egypt.

Agosto beat home side Ahly 86-77, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) 70-64 and Ferroviario Beira from Mozambique to a 3-0 record.

Ahly recovered from the opening game loss to beat REG 78-76 and Beira 86-77 to qualify second behind Agosto. Ahly won the competition in 2017.

The preliminary stage continues later this week with games in Group D involving AS Mazembe, Smouha SC and Atletico Petroles set to be played.
