Smouha SC has taken a big step towards qualifying to the semifinals of the 2019 FIBA Africa Basketball League (AfroLeague) after beating fellow Egyptian side Al Ahly in Cairo.

The first of the two legged tie ended with Smouha winning 91-82 in the home arena of Ahly ahead of the return leg on April 7 in Alexandria.

After sweeping all before them in Group D to qualify to the ELITE 8 stage, James Justice Jnr. led his Smouha in points, rebounds and assists.

In the all Egyptian clash however, Forward Adamu Saaka was Smouha’s most potent offensive weapon as he led the side with 26 points. He added three rebounds and three assists.

Justice Jnr. scored 18 points with seven rebounds and seven assists in the win that stretches Smouha’s unbeaten run to four games.

On the other hand, the loss was the latest in Ahly’s recent struggles in the continental competition after qualifying from Group C with two wins in three games.

American Forward Todd O’Brien led Ahly with 26 points with Guard Quddus Bello adding 16 points. Ahly won the 2016 edition of this competition.
