The recently concluded 2019 FIBA Women’s African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) in Senegal had the largest crowd recorded on the continent show up.

A record 15,000 spectators watched the final game of the competition between host Senegal and 2017 Champions Nigeria at the newly built Dakar Arena.

Senegal lost 55-60 in a tense game that had Nigeria win its second straight final game against Senegal and successfully defend its title.

The spectator numbers beat the previous record of 11,500 set in 2017 and 2015 FIBA organized competitions in Tunisia and Angola respectively.

A near capacity crowd witnessed a stunning comeback from Senegal to beat Mozambique in the semifinals with the host country only taking the game’s lead for the first time midway through the final quarter.

However, a successful ending was denied to Senegal who had Minnesota Timberwolves Center Gorgui Dieng watching from the stands.

Fan favourite and veteran Forward Astou Traore was named to the All Tournament team alongside Nigerian duo Ezinne Kalu and Evelyn Akhator.
