Former NBA All Star Luol Deng has stated he is aware of the enormous potential of basketball in South Sudan to become a force on the African continent.
He made this statement in an interview with FIBA Media as South Sudan celebrated its ninth Independence Day anniversary on July 8.
Due to war in his homeland, Deng spent several years in England and went on to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics as one of the high profile figures on the team as two time NBA All Star with Chicago Bulls.
“I know the situation back home and what my people have been through for many years. I also see the talent and I know the potential and I wanted to come back and do something” he said.
Since retiring from playing professional basketball, Deng has been named South Sudan Basketball Federation President and Basketball Africa League Ambassador.
He also played for Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA.
