A first season delayed by the pandemic
The league is a joint competition of the NBA and FIBA, built to replace the older African club championship with a fixed format and a commercial operation behind it. Its first season was meant to tip off on 13 March 2020. The spread of the coronavirus scrapped that date, and the opening edition was postponed several times.
By October 2020 the plan was a compact tournament in Rwanda between 5 and 18 December. That date did not hold either. The first Basketball Africa League season was finally played in Kigali in May 2021, with all twelve clubs gathered in one city, and Zamalek of Egypt became the first champion after beating US Monastir of Tunisia in the final.

The seasons that followed
The single-city format of 2021 did not last. From 2022 the league split its regular season into conferences played in different host cities, with the playoffs and the final brought back to Kigali. The title moved around the continent: US Monastir won it in 2022, Al Ahly of Egypt in 2023 after beating AS Douanes in the final, and Petro de Luanda of Angola in 2024.
Each of those champions came from a country with a long-established club league and regular continental experience. Egypt, Tunisia and Angola had been the powers of the older African club championship as well, and the new league's early winners confirmed that the clubs best placed to collect the prize were the ones already used to travelling, playing and recruiting at that level.
Where Ghana stood in the qualifiers
Twelve clubs qualified for the first season. Among them were Rivers Hoopers of Nigeria, AS Douanes of Senegal, AS Salé of Morocco and Patriots of Rwanda, the host country's champions.
Ghana's champions, Braves of Customs, were not on the list. They had entered the 2019 qualifying tournaments, the route open to national champions across the continent, and were eliminated there. For Ghana basketball the lesson was a familiar one: the domestic title is only the ticket to the qualifiers, and the qualifiers are where the gap to the continent's strongest clubs becomes visible.
From school courts to the continental stage
The players who could carry a Ghana club into the league have mostly come through school courts and the Sprite Ball championship, the national senior high school competition where many Ghanaian names first appear in print.
