Basketballghana.com can confirm Small Forward/ Shooting Guard Awudu Abass has been replaced in the Italian National Men’s Basketball Team by Danilo Gallinari.

The news was confirmed following the official announcement of the 12 man roster to represent Italy at the Tokyo Olympics which commences on July 24.

Abass, born to Ghanaian parents in Italy, featured in Italy’s run of games at the Olympics mini qualification tournament that took place in Belgrade, Serbia.

Italy beat Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and host nation Serbia to book a place at the Tokyo Olympics; qualifying to the competition marks Italy’s first appearance at the Olympics since 2004.

Giampaolo Ricci and Abass were on the hook once, Gallinari made his intentions to join the national team clear in the aftermath of Atlanta Hawks elimination from the NBA playoffs at the Eastern Conference finals.

Abass featured at the 2019 Basketball World Cup held in China and before competing in Serbia, won the Italian League title in his debut season at Virtus Bologna.
