St. Joseph’s CYO Basketball Club held its own against Ghana Fire Service through three quarters but fell apart in the fourth quarter. The team held a 10 point lead at the end of the first quarter.
CYO ended up losing 41-65 to Fire in a 2021 Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division I matchup played out at the Prisons Court in Cantonments.
Fire’s Emmanuel Ocquaye scored the game’s first points. Melody Edwards scored off a spin move inside the paint after Prince Adu Gyamfi and Andre Adusei scored three pointers for CYO. Pious Wilberforce scored a jumper and Ocquaye scored for Fire. Yusha Iddi gathered a long pass and scored a layup to end the quarter with CYO leading 16-6.
Fire held a 6-1 advantage after 2:33 minutes played with Clement Tetteh and Ocquaye scoring to trail 12-17. Ocquaye and David Laryea scored three pointers to give Fire an 18-17 lead.
Isaac Cudjoe and Wilberforce scored for Fire with the team leading 25-20 lead. Adusei completed a three point play and CYO ended the half trailing 23-25.
Rauf Zakari scored off an inbound pass from Samuel Nyantakyi to tie the game at 25. Edwards blocked Bright Yeboah and Ocquaye restored Fire’s lead by converting one of two free throws and Yeboah added two points for Fire.
Iddi scored five points including a three pointer in response to Fire’s seven point output that had Laryea scoring. CYO Guard Emmanuel Baidoo tied the game at 32 with 3:55 minutes left. After trading baskets, Jibril Musah scored the last four points to put Fire up 40-35.
Fire went on a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter; Iddi ended the run by draining all two free throws. Yeboah scored four straight points including a beautiful layup for Fire Service.
Tetteh scored four points off fast break layups with Okoe getting one of his own to put Fire up 60-37 with 2:48 minutes left in the game. Edwards scored the final point for CYO via a layup by gathering an offensive rebound. Yeboah did same for Fire on the Fast break to end the game.
