For the hundreds of basketball fans who witnessed the opening day games of season-2 of Community Dunks, the exploits, speed and tenacity of James Town’s power forward Solomon Oppong never went unnoticed.
Oppong, 17, caught the admiration of the sizeable crowd with some transcendent piece of skills and his movement and character was the key moment in his side’s opening game against host Legon.
Despite their opening day defeat to Legon, Oppong produced an individual brilliance on the court and clearly he’s one potential made for the future.
Oppong is polite, amiable and ultimately eager to please people. That’s has always been his way, but a different side of him began to percolate in the championships, a colder, cutting instinct coming out of this MVP target. This isn’t considered great form at a local event, but that pop of his jersey-flashing the Legon insignia – at the Legon fans in the opening day defeat made some basketball people stand straight.
He’s one of the prospects who by every stretch of imagination will be interesting and exciting to watch. He stands tall among his peers and despite the seemingly not too impressive display from team James Town on Saturday, he once again underlined his individual brilliance and will be one of the young players to make season-2 of Community Dunks one for the books.
He’s got pace, quick on the fast break and has an eye for rebounds and these positive traits undoubtedly if nurtured well could propel him to the highest apogee.
After all he’s only 17 years.
