Hilda Koranteng was the star of the show as holders Nkawkaw Senior High Girls (Nkawsec) began the defence of their title with an 8-3 victory over Akosombo International School as schools in the Eastern region take their turn in the 2010 Sprite Ball Championship.

It was a surprise draw the pit the defending champions against the side they beat in the finals last year to lift the trophy.

Nkawsec showed tremendous power play and mental fortitude to win the opening contest in a rather easy fashion as they were superior in all the department of the game.

Power forward and the ‘engine’ of the team Hilda Koranteng who inspired the side to win the championship in their debut season was once again the star of the moment as he showed amazing skills on the court to help her side win their opening game.

They’ve sent a clear message to other schools in the girls division that they’re keen to defend the trophy they won last year.

The team from AIS looked lethargic and lacked the confidence as the succumbed to their first ever opening defeat in the Sprite Ball Championship. They don’t look like a side capable of chasing for honours and will need to conjure some magic in subsequent matches in the prestigious basketball championship.

Elsewhere, St Paul’s have just accounted for Ghana Senior High School 16-11 in another end to end action while Abusco also beat Okuapeman Senior High 28-16 in the boys division.

More to follow soon.
