Captain of Sunyani Polytechnic, Peter Amankwaa, help the side clinched qualification to the grand-finale of the prestigious first ever Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) basketball championship in zone C over the weekend and the talented point guard is optimistic at their chances in the competition.
The dust has been settled and despite their final game defeat to host Kumasi Polytechnic, the final year student showed excessive glimpses of massive potential with some amazing fast breaks and rebounds in the one-day competition.
The man inched the tag as the best 3- pointer in the competition which drew a sizeable crowd to the venue on April 9, 2011 exciting fans with some sublime piece of skills and power play to the charging of crazy basketball spectators.
The team which was the only one from the Brong Ahafo conference seemed to be coming unglued. Playing against a bunch of backups, they blew a 5-point lead in the final crunch game they needed to lock up a better deal.
Thanks to the ingenuity and Kumasi-Poly ‘show boys’ Hackman, Charles and Pope with the latter nodding home 3-pointers in a difficult game.
Still, the gutty play of the bench of Sunyani Polytechnic provided some spark for a team that has looked downright lethargic at times during the competition.
They ran out of steam in this one. But the team had another stretch that raised questions about how well they’ll hold up over the grind of the final playoffs in Accra on April 16.
‘We’re disappointed we lost the final game, but we still believe it’s a confidence booster for the team’’. Amankwaa said.’ If we get to the grand-finals, we know we could actually make an impact’
‘Sometimes it’s not pretty but I believe we’re doing the little things necessary to win. That what matters in the final analysis because some games won’t be so pretty’.
The battle lines have been drawn with four Polytechnics- Accra –Poly, Kumasi Poly, Takoradi Poly and Sunyani –Poly battling for honours against two universities – the University of Ghana and the University of Education, Winneba.
