University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER) handed a 34-30 defeat to begin proceedings of the Zone C leg of the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship which took place at UNER’s basketball court.

The 2016 UPAC Championship, headlined by Rexona already has University of Development Studies secure qualification to the quarter final after going undefeated in Zone B games held at Tamale Polytechnic on Wednesday March 9.

UNER, playing in front of a partisan crowd made good on its’ promise of qualifying to the quarter finals of the competition by taking an early lead over Sunyani Polytechnic and extending the lead to as many as 12 points heading into the final quarter of the game.

However, a spirited rally from Sunyani had the men in white reduce the deficit to two points before UNER converted a pair of free throws to seal the win for UNER. Center Benjamin “Ibaka” Quarshie top scored with 12 points and added eight rebounds and four assists.

The lanky defender who made a mark in the GUSA (Ghana University Sports Association) Games for his shot blocking exploits made himself a nuisance in the paint by gobbling up rebounds which inevitably handed UNER second chance scoring opportunities.

UNER plays Sunyani Nurses Training College in the second round of games. Sunyani Polytechnic on the other hand, must win its ‘next game against CTHOILIC University College.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, Y FM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
