University of Ghana (UG) silenced their noisy neighbors Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) by handing the latter a massive 53-29 beat down in Group A’s opening quarter final game in the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.

The quarter final games of the third edition of the Championship is underway at Accra Polytechnic with the second day of quarter final games, semis final games and final game set to take place at the University of Ghana on April 15 and 16 respectively.

Despite the pregame hype talk, the game did not live up to expectation as GIMPA never quite matched the high level of intensity from UG’s younger but equally talented players which boasts the likes of Emmanuel Wolff and Maxwell Mod.

GIMPA on the other hand, fielded a talented starting lineup with loads of experience including Kwame Boamah, Jake Morrison, McMartey Lawer and Paul Eta. The “old “ legs of GIMPA couldn’t keep up with fresher ones from UG, GIMPA’s bright start tailed off as the scorching sun and lung busting runs sapped the team’s energy.

UG will take on Accra Polytechnic and late replacements Valley View University in subsequent games in the group and will be in the hunt for another win to cement its’ grip on the top spot.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
