The New York Knicks need a point guard and they reportedly may try to trade for Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose. According to ESPN’s Ian Begley, the Knicks have had “internal discussions” about offering a trade to the Bulls that will net them Rose.

To clarify, this is just a discussion the Knicks’ front office is having among themselves. The Knicks have not contacted the Bulls about Rose and as Begley notes, they also don’t have that much to offer in a trade.

Really, the only assets the Knicks have are Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. But there is really no way the Knicks will trade Porzingis away after a promising rookie year and Anthony has a no-trade clause, so he can veto any trade he is involved in. The Knicks could offer up future first-round picks though and that would likely be part of any deal involving Rose if these talks actually progress.

Rose is a free agent after the 2016-2017 season so if the Knicks do acquire him, it would likely be as a one-year experiment. And if Rose proves to be a good fit, the Knicks can then sign him to a longer deal. But at 27 years old and still limited due to multiple knee injuries, Rose’s prime may already be over so it wouldn’t be a smart move for the Knicks to trade away multiple picks and a player or two just for an experiment.
