Reigning GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) Games Basketball Champions, University of Ghana (UG), have arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa to compete in the All Africa University Games. The multi sport competition will have tertiary institutions from Africa participate for honours in the event’s eight edition.
The Ghanaian champs arrived in South Africa as part of a strong contingent of Ghanaian athletes who will represent the nation. Athletes set to compete in several disciplines from other tertiary institutions in the West African nation including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and University of Education-Winneba, form part of a sizable entourage.
Having added the UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) Basketball Championship title to their medal for the first part of the year, UG is one of Ghana’s main medal hopefuls in the Games.
However, the team made the journey without head coach Meme Falconer who was in the United States to attend the NBA Draft. He is set to join the team in South Africa before the basketball competition begins.
The competition will be held between June 26 and July 2 at the University of Johannesburg and Tshwane University of Technology.
All Africa University Games, commonly known as the FASU Games is a multi sport university sport event organised every after 2 years. This year’s edition will have athletes compete in basketball, table tennis, football, volleyball and tennis.
