The University of Ghana successfully held a press conference earlier today at the institution’s Sports Directorate following the institution’s magnificent showing in the just ended All Africa University Games.

The event which was graced by several dignitaries including Ghana Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Chairman of the Ghana Basketball Association David Addo Ashong and Director of Sports for the institution Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu.

Speaking at the event, the Sports Minister-a former standout athlete for University of Ghana- acknowledged the tremendous achievement by the institution particularly its Male Basketball Team which won gold in the hyper competitive event by stating “your achievement is monumental”.

He reiterated his ministry’s commitment to support other sports disciplines by noting the medium term goal is to construct multipurpose indoor facilities in every district in Ghana.

On his part, Dr. Bello said, “We are here to celebrate a great achievement and we are here to celebrate our gratitude to the entire team and staff….The triumph is a manifestation of successfully combining education and sports”.

Ghana Basketball Association Chairman David Addo Ashong stated the Association was liaising with corporate bodies to develop an indoor court for the institution.

Head trainer Henry Nii Sackey, Assistant Registrar of the University Regina Afari and Dr. George Akalipare, a Sports Directorate Advisory Board Member, also took turns to brief the media on the tremendous success by the basketball team.

UG’s Male Basketball Team has had a remarkable year by winning three major trophies including the GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, polytechnics and Colleges) basketball competitions.
