Per reports gathered by Basketballghana.com, Ghana’s National Wheelchair Basketball Federation failed to represent at the African Wheelchair Basketball Conference held in Morocco few days ago.

According to National Media Coordinator Sandy Asiedu, the federation’s sole representative, Coach Elvis Alupui could not honor the invitation due to delay meeting financial requirements.

Speaking in an interview with Ghana’s leading basketball news hub, Asiedu who doubles as a scout, reiterated the federation’s acute financial situation was the reason behind the federation’s initial choice of sending one representative instead of the recommended three. It was also the reason behind the delay in payment.

“Elvis couldn’t go because his funding came four days after the tournament had started so he couldn’t go” he said.

The Conference which was held during the African Wheelchair Basketball Championship was essential in upgrading the knowledge base of participants in the areas of classification and coaching. The national team failed to qualify for the African games and eventually the Olympic Games set to take place in Rio, Brazil in September.

The federation was expected to pay $7000 to cover their expenses during the three day conference. As a result, Ghana’s federation is likely to face sanctions from the International board.
