Tema Central has won the maiden edition of the Ebi Bright Basketball Tournament by beating Flashlights of Tema New Town 44-40 in the final game of the one day tournament at the Community 4 Court in Tema.

The competition which was fully funded by National Democratic Congress’ prospective Member of Parliament Ebi Bright, had four teams in the men’s division and two female teams play out exciting games before a plethora of dignitaries headlined by Ghana Youth and Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye and Mayor of Tema Isaac Ashai Odamtten.

Flashlights shocked favorites Ashaiman Lions with a 58-51 win in the opening game before Tema Central repeated the shock dose by beating highly fancied Nungua Coldstore 36-27 setting a finals matchup for the sides.

Prior to the final game, two female select sides from Accra and Tema played out an entertaining game before the packed venue and an ecstatic Bright, who is a strong advocate for championing the cause of women.

On the back off frenetic activity on defense which generated a flurry of steals in the second half, Tema strolled to a 33-20 victory.

The final was closely contested as a 15-5 first quarter Tema Central lead quickly turned into a three point lead for Tema in the opening stages of the second quarter.

Veterans Benjamin Debrah and Patrick Gomerli were instrumental in a seven nothing run for Flashlights with Gomerli completing a three point play after getting fouled on a drive. A crucial three point shot from the corner by Kent Fosu gave Tema a 41-34 lead late in the game to all but end the tie.

On her part, Evi Bright expressed satisfaction with the turn up and level of skill which echoed those made by the Sports Minister who further stated Tema is set to be among the first beneficiaries of a modern multipurpose court next year.

Tema Central Guard and Captain Aninagyei Osei was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
