Point Guard Joel Kwame Opoku in action for UG.

Defending GUSA Games Basketball Champions University of Ghana (UG) ended the preliminary round of games at the ongoing Mini GUSA Games basketball with a 103-53 hammering of University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

The game was the second of the round with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) beating a hitherto undefeated University of Education-Winneba (UEW) side 49-36 in the opening game.

Host University of Cape-Coast (UCC) finished off University of Professional Studies (UPSA)’s woeful campaign with an 85-42 win.

The loss was UPSA’s third in the competition leaving the side without a win in the tournament.

UG’s emphatic win gives the All Africa University Games Champions an unblemished record in the multi sport tournament and a spot in the latter stage.

It tops Group A with maximum points ahead of University of Development Studies (UDS) whose 46-44 win over UENR see it check in at the second spot.

The host’s win over UPSA was needed to seal its place in the semi final stage as it tied KNUST’s win record.

However, a superior goal difference pushes it into the tournament’s next stage. It qualifies alongside UCC from Group B.

Below is a full list of results:

KNUST 49-36 UEW
UG 103-53 UENR
UPSA 42-85 UCC
