A minute silence in honor of fallen Ghana basketball legends Matthias Ocloo and Benjamin Baafi began proceedings of the 2017 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship but Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) and Ho Technical University with ramped up the atmosphere at the University of Ghana.

Ho beat University of Professional Studies (UPSA) 39-37 in the Zone D opener in a game that descended into a three point shootout contest that the Volta Region-based institution won.

Ho led through the first half with a 10-6 first quarter lead and 17-9 lead in the second quarter.

Kingsley Quist led GTUC to a 46-37 win in the game played alongside the Zone A debut game. The contest started out slowly with a flurry of missed shots culminating in low scoring game.

GTUC however ended the first department with a 6-5 win.

The second quarter continued in similar fashion as GTUC extended the lead to nine with a 21-12 lead.
Reigning Champions University of Ghana (UG) play Blue Crest University College next in Zone D with Marshalls University College taking on GIMPA in Zone A.
