2016 Ghana Basketball Referee of the Year Gasu Quarmyne has descended heavily on organizers of Ghana’s National Sports Festival tagging the multi sport event as the National Suffering Festival.

He made the statement when he commented on news reported on the pay out for officials who supervised the wheelchair basketball competition in the just ended tournament.

Officials including members of the West African nation’s Wheelchair Basketball Federation, were given 100 Ghana Cedis ($22.61) each with the exception of Federation President Max Vardon who received 150 Ghana Cedis ($33).

“On some of the days, officials had to return to their places of residence at their own cost and some of us got to Kumasi on our own. I’m well informed the athletes had to contend with bedbugs and really poor toilet facilities.the organization of the National Sports Festival was nothing to write home about. For me, it was the National Suffering Festival!” he said.

The event which was held for the first time since 2011 had a reported budget north of $50,000. Brong-Ahafo Region won the wheelchair basketball competition by beating Greater Accra Region 27-25 in the final game with Ashanti Region coming third.

Players from the final game dominate recent call ups to the National Team.
