STU Guard Patrick Asare drives to the hoop against ATU.

Accra Technical University (ATU) Men’s Basketball Team has taken a big step closer to defend the Ghana Technical Universities / Polytechnics Sports Association (GHATUSA) Games Basketball title.

ATU beat Sunyani Technical University 29-20 in the semifinals of this year’s edition played earlier today at ATU’s court.

The defending champions and host battled from behind to clinch the win in a very physical game played at frenetic pace.

Sunyani led 5-3 in the first quarter. Both teams missed shots from the field and only scored from the free throw line bar a three point shot from Edmund Agyemang Duah.

ATU Guard Abdul Razak scored a tough jump shot to give his side its first lead of the game with a 6-5 result but it was short lived as STU completed a three point play to regain the lead. ATU got two free throws to tie the game at 8 at half time.

The teams traded baskets early on in the third quarter but a six point run got Accra Technical up 18-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Frederick Gyan scored late on in the quarter to cap a big final quarter from ATU to clinch the win. ATU plays Takoradi Technical University in the final game on Saturday, February 9.
