The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup is drawing to a close with Spain and Argentina set to play in the final game on Sunday, September 15.

For Africa’s five representatives in the competition, their run ended earlier than the aforementioned pair but did impress all the same.

For the first time ever in the history of the World Cup, African nations won multiple games with Tunisia and Nigeria winning three games apiece.

In five games, Tunisia won three including a 79-67 win over Iran and one the reigning African Champs losses was a 62-101 result against Spain.

Nigeria won three games and clinched a place in next year’s Olympics ahead of Tunisia thanks to goal difference. Nigeria beat China 86-73 in the crucial game.

Angola beat Philippines 84-81 for its solitary win in China but Senegal and Ivory Coast were not successful in the win column as both countries lost all five games.

Had Nigeria and Tunisia recorded two wins in the preliminary stage of the competition, they would have progressed to the second round.
