Nungua Coldstore Basketball Club has won the 2019 Tema Community Basketball League Title for the second year in a row after sweeping the Finals Series earlier tonight.
Coldstore beat Spintex Knights 93-80 in Game 2 of the Finals Series at the Tema Community 4 Court; the title is Nungua’s third in the four year history of the league.
The winning team survived an onslaught in Game One and dug deep to clinch a 70-67 win and for long stretches in Game 2, the game was played in a similar tone until clutch play late in the game made the difference.
Coldstore Guard Joel Tham was named Most Valuable Player in the League and his late game heroics were crucial in Nungua’s win; Tham stole the ball off Knights Guard Kontor Appiah, slam dunked ball and converted two free throw attempts with 28 seconds left to play.
Knights held a 37-31 lead at half time but turnovers early in the third quarter turned the tide against them as Coldstore scored eight straight points; Coldstore led 62-52 heading to the final quarter.
Knights Center Rashid Kuta was named Defensive Player of the Year and delivered a highlight chase down block in the final quarter.
Coldstore Coach Wendell Otoo was named Coach of the Year for the second time in two seasons; Knights had to make due with a silver medal in its debut season.
