South Sudan Men’s Basketball Team Head Coach Luol Deng has indicated his team’s aim in the ongoing 2021 AfroBasket qualifiers is to change the narrative about the young country.

He said this in the aftermath of leading South Sudan to clinch its first win in the qualifiers thanks to a 77-64 win over one of the continent’s best nation’s, Mali.

It was former NBA All Star Deng’s debut win as a Coach and he stressed the importance of changing the basketball narrative about his native country in his post game interview with FIBA.

“We want to change the story and narrative about us. We want people to start talking about what we have and what we can bring to the table when it comes to basketball” he said.

South Sudan lost its opening game against Nigeria and is set to play Rwanda later today; next year’s continental competition is to be hosted in Rwanda’s Kigali Arena. Due to COVID 19 related issues, a handful of qualification games are taking place in the Rwandan capital.
