Earlier today at the DUNK Court in Jamestown in Ghana’s capital, Accra, Galaxy Basketball Academy emerged winners of the maiden edition of the Waterpark Sports Invitational (WPSI) Basketball Tournament. Galaxy beat University of Ghana (UG) 52-42 in the final.

Galaxy rode on a 20 point lead heading into the fourth quarter to seal the win and make history as the first team to clinch the title in the tournament that was a resounding success and sure to have subsequent editions roll out down the years.

The youngsters from Tudu held on to withstand a late University of Ghana onslaught the deserved win; in the semifinals, Galaxy beat Cedar Oak Basketball Academy 42-22.

Match Report

Galaxy led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter but Legon went on a six point run with Kuuku Baidoo Mensah and Naphtali scoring in the run to tie the game at 12. Galaxy regrouped and went on a scoring run to regain the game’s lead.

Divine Quartey scored a tough layup Rafiq Brimah missed on completing a three point play after getting fouled off a beautiful passing from Galaxy. Mubarak piled on the points for Galaxy; Nathaniel Yeboah scored from the free throw line to end UG’s scoring drought but trailed 15-23 at half time.

UG committed unforced turnovers and Galaxy’s aggressive trap defense also UG to concede possession. Raymond Affram and Quartey profited from the giveaways to bag points for Galaxy. Gabriel Hammond Rafiq scored free throws for UG. Rafiq scored a three pointer to give his side a 42-22 third quarter lead.

UG ended the game on a strong note with Nigel Quaynor slamming home a two handed dunk. Galaxy did more than enough to clinch the game 52-42 after a sizable lead that made it very tough for UG to wipe out.

Galaxy Guard Affram was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
