Power Forward for Nigeria’s Men’s Basketball Team Chimezie Metu has spoken about the importance of his team progressing to the next stage in the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualification on the African continent.

He said this according to the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF)’s Official Twitter page ahead of qualification games from July 1 to July 3 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. Nigeria leads Group A ahead of Mali, Uganda and Cape Verde.

“I can’t let us go down without a fight. We’ve come too far. This next window is huge for us qualifying” Nigeria’s highest profile player Metu said ahead of the qualifiers.

Nigeria plays Cape Verde tomorrow at 10:00 GMT in its opening game; a top three finish guarantees the 2015 African Champions a place in the next stage. 12 teams in all will get split into two groups to compete beyond this stage with the top two teams in each group and the best third place team making it to the World Cup.

Sacramento Kings Forward Metu played for Nigeria at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
