The 2016 Rexona Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship is set to take place between March 5 and April 16. Conversely, a series of warm up games for participating schools to fine tune their skills will precede the much awaited tournament.

Counting down to tip off later this month, Basketballghana.com takes a look at Ghana Institue of Management and Public Administration’s chances at claiming the biggest and best tertiary competition in Ghana.

GIMPA made its’ debut in last year’s edition which happened to be the second ever UPAC Championship by impressing observers and competition alike. The Legon based institution lost out on qualifying from Zone One after losing 20-25 to University of Professional Studies (UPSA).

The close result showed how strong the potential of the team was despite playing against a UPSA team handled by veteran tactician Emmanuel ” Coach Ghana” Essel and playing before a partisan home crowd.

GIMPA beat Ho Polytechnic and Pentecost University College before losing to UPSA on the back of strong performances from star names like McMartey Lawer, Kwame Boamah Djan and Jake Morrison. The trio formed the nucleus of everything the team did on both sides of the court.

However, the team over relied on their star guys a bit too much as it took just a bad game to cause a GIMPA defeat as it did in the final Zone One game. The team will look forward to adopt a different strategy ahead of the championship with promise of succesful results.

The 2016 UPAC BAsketball Championship is sponsored by the world’s best selling deodorant brand Rexona and supported by CAL Bank in partnership with media outlets including TV3, Starr FM and Basketballghana.com and Graphic Sports.
