The 2016 Rexona Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship is set to take place between March 5 and April 16. Conversely, a series of warm up games for participating schools to fine tune their skills will precede the much awaited tournament.

Counting down to tip off later this month, Basketballghana.com takes a look at respective teams raring to have a shot at claiming the biggest and best tertiary competition, starting with defending champions Accra Polytechnic.

At the 2015 edition, Accra Polytechnic handed a 53-40 defeat to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The two time champions have seemingly made the competition their own following wonderful showings in previous editions that go way beyond amassing the trophy at stake.

Regarded as the biggest name in the nation, Accra Polytechnic’s dominance was accentuated by the sheer number of awards it scooped at the 2015 Ghana Basketball Awards.

The institution won basketball team of the year and GHAPSA (Ghana Polytechnics Sports Association) Games Male and Female champions. Abdul Mutaleb Alhassan was adjudged the overall best player with Romeo Enan and Brimah Lawal scooping the tertiary player and Coach of the year respectively.

Accra Polytechnic will need no motivation ahead of the upoming games as coach Lawal and Alhasssan-the main catalysts behind the school’s success- will return for another go around.

A-Poly’s message to opponents; bring it on.

The 2016 UPAC BAsketball Championship is sponsored by the world’s best selling deodorant brand Rexona and supported by CAL Bank in partnership with media outlets including TV3, Starr FM and Basketballghana.com and Graphic Sports.
