The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) sealed qualification to the quarter final stage of the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship from Zone C games played yesterday at the institutions basketball court.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona and had four teams UENR, Sunyani Polytechnic, Sunyani Nurses Training College and Catholic University College compete against each other for the chance to play in the last eight of the competition which is set to take place at the University of Ghana on April 14.

The host institution made the most of a massive crowd by first beating Sunyani Polytechnic 34-30 in the opening game and followed it up with a 36-14 win over Sunyani Nurses Training College. The undefeated run was put to the ultimate test in the final round against equally unbeaten side Catholic University College but ultimately triumphed 49-24.

The surprising lop sided victory meant UENR would represent Brong Ahafo Region in the main competition. UENR’s perfect record hinged mainly on captain Ben “Ibaka” Quarshie and Point Guard Robert Fiifi Brew who provided the perfect one-two punch for UENR. The latter was named Tournament Most Valuable Player following outstanding displays particularly in the final where he almost single handedly wielded his team to a massive win.

UENR’s progression delighted a major chunk of fans who thronged the secluded court and team coach Andy Quansah who described the institutions latest achievement as a “happy” occasion and one that brings a “good feeling” to the team.

UENR join Zone B winners University of Development Studies as the institutions to secure quarter final spots in the competition. Zone A’s winner is yet to be decided as heavy rainfall prevented final round of games from taking place.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is supported by MTN, CAL Bank and Fanyogo in partnership with Basketballghana.com, TV3, Y FM and Ghana Sports Newspaper.
