University of Ghana (UG) and Marshalls University College opened Zone G qualifiers of the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship with wonderful wins over Wisconsin University College and Central University College respectively.

Host UG rode non-stop support of a partisan crowd to down fellow Legon-based side Wiscosin University 52-32 in the opening game of the day. The reigning Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Basketball Champions took the initiative right from the blast of the whistle and proceeded on pummeling their opponents with energetic rebounding and relentless hustle plays.

On the other end of the court, Shooting Guard Emmanuel Wolffe and Power Forward Maxwell Mod had the Midas touch to put Legon out of touch with Wisconsin following consecutive made baskets. Wisconsin had very little to offer as they struggled to get anything going in terms of scoring.

Marshalls on other hand, made the most anticipated matchup of the zone a reality with a similar dominant display against Central University College to win 42-26. Marshalls University College, led by veteran Shooting Guard David Laryea never looked troubled at any point in the game as they controlled the pace and scoring in the game.

By defeating Central, Marshalls hit one Championship target by revenging defeat the team suffered to Central in last year’s edition. Marshalls plays Wisconsin next as UG takes on Central in the next round of games.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by Fanyogo, MTN and CAL Bank in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports.
