University of Ghana (UG) has ended Marshalls University College’s winning streak after recording a close 31-29 win in Zone G qualifiers of the 2016 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.

The win ensured UG progresses to the quarter finals of the third edition of the UPAC Championship by virtue of topping the zone following a wonderful winning run in the preliminary round of qualifiers.

Despite the loss, Marshalls University sneaked into the last eight of the competition by being the second best placed team between Zones A, F and G. A superior goal difference was what separated the team from Ho Polytechnic in
Zone A and Valley View University in Zone F.

The reigning PUSAG (Private Universities Students Association Games) Basketball Champions went into the tournament on the back of an impressive winning run which stretched all the way to last year, made the right start by beating Central University College 42-26.

Marshalls followed the win with a 51-25 beat down of Wisconsin University College in the next game before cruelly losing the final game of the day to UG. The loss will be difficult for celebrated coach James Okine and his charges as two converted free throws would have changed the dynamic of the game in the closing seconds.

Marshalls will hope to put the loss behind them as quickly as possible since the quarter finals begin on April 14.

The 2016 UPAC Championship is headlined by Rexona, supported by Fanyogo, MTN and CAL Bank in partnership with Basketballghana.com, Y FM, TV3 and Ghana Sports.
