University of Ghana’s (UG) Male Basketball team headlined the list of winners at the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Sports Awards which took place at the institution’s Central Cafeteria. The annual award ceremony honors outstanding sports personalities who distinguished themselves in the year.

This year’s event was graced by prominent individuals including Vice-Chancellor of University of Ghana Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Sports Directorate head Doctor Bella Bello Bitugu and Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s leading basketball enterprise, Rite Sports Limited, Yaw Sakyi Afari.

The team was honored for its’ valiant display since the start of the year where UG captured the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Basketball competition at the University of Education-Winneba in January.

UG followed the impressive win with yet another title winning showing in the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship. The team’s win was remarkable considering it defeated unbeaten champions Accra Polytechnic twice in the competition with a 45-44 win coming in the final game.

On the night, Shooting Guard Emmanuel Wolff was awarded Most Promising Sportsman of the Year. Wolff’s late three point shot gave UG the lead with less than 10 seconds left on the clock which ensured the team won its’ first UPAC title.

Other individuals were also awarded for excelling in other categories which included Most Promising Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year and Discovery of the Year.
