West African sides Chad and Cape Verde will have another shot at competing in the upcoming Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) and 2019 World Cup qualifiers after both teams got selected to compete in a special tournament.

The competition will be held in Bamako, Mali between May 19 and May 21 with the West African duo set to compete against Central African Republic and Zimbabwe for a spot in this year’s AfroBasket.

Chad and Central African missed out on the Championship after falling behind Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo in Zone 4.

Cape Verde fell behind Senegal and Mali in the hypercompetitive Zone 2 while Zimbabwe fell short of a playoff game against South Africa.

The winner replaces AfroBasket original host Congo Republic; the Central African nation withdrew from the competition earlier in the year.

Securing a spot in the upcoming biannual African competition, gives the successful side an automatic spot in the 2019 World Cup qualifiers which begin in November.
