Mozambican side Ferroviario Maputo leads Group E of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers after the first round of games.

Maputo beat Dolphins Basketball Club from Botswana 94-64 in its first appearance in the maiden edition of the joint NBA-FIBA Africa competition.

Ferroviario was the biggest winner of the round thanks to the 30 point win over Dolphins and puts the team on top of the standings ahead of its second game today against Lions Club.

Namibian side Lions lost 55-64 on Day One to Mercenaries from Zimbabwe while South African side Jozi Nuggets lost 70-74 to University of Zambia.

University of Zambia plays Mercenaries while Dolphins Jozi Nuggets in must win games for all teams; only the top two teams progress to the Elite 16 stage of the tournament.

Patriots from Rwanda and City Oilers from Uganda progressed over this past weekend from Group D while FAP Basketball from Cameroon and Manga from Gabon qualified from Group C.

Ghana’s Braves of Customs are in Group  C and commences its run on October 29.
