A host of heavyweights on the African continent flexed their muscles in qualification games for the 2021 Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) to be hosted in Kigali, Rwanda.

Defending Champion Tunisia, 2015 Champion Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Egypt won all three games top their respective groups in the first round of qualifiers.

The second round of qualifiers is to be played from February 19 to February 21 next year; Tunisia leads Group A with Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Egypt leading Groups B, C,D and E respectively.

The top three teams in each group qualify to the main competition to be staged at the Kigali Arena which was constructed in August, 2019.

The surprise team in the qualifiers so far has been South Sudan who clinched two wins out of three games played in Group D.

South Sudan lost to Nigeria in the opening game but recovered to beat Rwanda 67-55 and Mali 77-64 to rank second in the group. The team is coached by former NBA All Star Luol Deng.
